Learn the In-The-Hands Faro Shuffle
The ability to do perfect faro shuffles is a powerful weapon in the card magician’s arsenal of sleights. It is a genuine shuffle; the cards are truly being mixed. But it is also a controlled shuffle, meaning that the resulting order of the cards is not random. For this reason, it is an excellent adjunct to memorized deck work. I like to start with a memdeck that has been given six out-faro shuffles. In front of the spectators I give the deck two more out-faro shuffles. The deck has returned to stack order, but the spectators have seen two absolutely legitimate-looking in-the-hands shuffles. As far as the spectators are concerned, the cards have been shuffled, and must be in a random order. Very powerful indeed!

Twenty-five years ago, I developed a handling for the Torn and Restored Card effect. The routine was designed to solve many of the problems associated with this type of trick. The routine can be performed in most strolling environments, with or without a table. With adequate pre-show preparation (which is very simple) the trick resets almost immediately. The patter theme provides a logical reason why the card is torn up, and therefore the subsequent restoration comes as a surprise. The spectator is left with a souvenir that includes the magician’s contact information. In addition, the presentation solves one of the big “bugaboo” problems associated with this type of trick.

The popularity of memorized deck magic has continued unabated. Every day new magicians join the ranks of those who have discovered the power that comes from mastering a memdeck system. Memdeck practitioners are always searching for powerful, commercial routines, especially routines that leave the deck in stack order.
The Guatemalan Miracle is a hands-off mental effect that packs a powerful punch. It is almost self-working (or semi-automatic, if you prefer), but requires the basics of memorized deck work. Some low level sleight of hand is required to return the deck to stack order. It works with both the Aronson and the Tamariz stacks (and will probably work with other stacks as well). It also serves as an excellent lead-in to one of Tamariz’s great routines in Mnemonica.
